US Ignite: Live From Chattanooga, Los Angeles

We’re live streaming everything these days. TV shows, Presidential debates, speaking events, and concerts.

But, have you ever watched a concert online? Or have you ever seen musicians try to play together online? The experience is sub-par at best. The audio and video are often not synced, and the whole point of going to see live music – the live, raw experience, is really lost in blurry, low quality video and audio streams.

We can do better. And Chattanooga did this weekend.

Gig City to Host Hackanooga, Tech Development Event

In the next step in the quest to develop innovative uses for Chattanooga’s high-speed Internet, local and national leaders have invited computer whizzes from across the country to the Gig City for a 48-hour hack-a-thon called Hackanooga. 

“This particular event is for people that have hardcore tech development and coding skills,” J. Ed. Marston, vice president of marketing and communication for the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce, said. “Certainly we will be communicating with the broader public, but the people that are going to participate need to have those technical skills.”

GigTank Demo Day: Banyan, Babel Sushi and Iron Gaming Take Top Prizes

Today, Banyan was awarded the top $100,000 prize at GigTank Demo Day, for the groundbreaking version control system that they presented to a panel of judges and 500-plus audience. The event marked the finale of the 14-week GigTank accelerator program, co-hosted by CO.LAB and Lamp Post Group in partnership with the Chattanooga Chamber and EPB, which built and manages America’s largest 1 gigabit per second Internet in Chattanooga.

After 100 days in Chattanooga working tirelessly in the city’s GigTank competition, his company came out on top and walked away Thursday night with a $100,000 prize.

“Some of these groups are so damn good,” he said moments after he was handed the oversized check. “Before they announced the winners I was shaking.”

Nooga: Gig Tank Event Reflects Chattanooga's Vibrant Energy

Hundreds of people converged upon the Read House Thursday to witness the Gig Tank’s Demo Day, and—as one contest participant put it— the event was a reflection of Chattanooga itself.

“They have done a good job of it being a big event but it still feeling relatively small,” said Anthony Guglielmo, who pitched his company, Vigia, Thursday morning. “That’s the feeling of Chattanooga all encompassed in the event. It’s big enough to get the job done, but not overwhelming.”

Develop in The Cloud: Three Geek Teams Claim Gig Tank Awards

Yesterday in Chattanooga, Banyan, Babel Sushi, and Iron Gamer captured $160,000 in prize money at the demo day that capped the city’s summer-long Gig Tank competition.

As I wrote earlier this week, Chattanooga is reaching out in multiple ways to make people aware of the possibilities its city-wide, fiber-based gigabit Internet access will enable. The Gig Tank program’s explicit goal was to encourage separate teams of entrepreneurs and students to think broadly and deeply about what kinds of applications gigabit-per-second connectivity makes possible.
